It was an intimate yet lively affair. The church wedding was a traditional Catholic ceremony. However, the reception that followed was typical Japanese - Karaoke style!

The program began with a cake cutting ceremony followed by a duet from the couple. During the reception, the couple sat while enjoying the guests' speeches and performances. Some guests are asked to do something at the reception. There was a dance number and many people sang their favorite songs. Our group sang the classic tune - Kanpai.

It was a feast with flowing beer and sake. Feeling a bit tipsy, I needed to freshen up at a nearby Starbucks before going home :-)

Last March 7, we welcomed the summer season with a trip to Villa Alfredo's Resort in San Fernando, Pampanga to join the company outing.

The weather was fine in the morning but it became scorching hot by noon. The weather has been like this in the past few weeks. Once the sun is up, you got to find shade and it better has air-conditioning.

It was Mat's first time to travel outside Manila. He was naturally amazed at his surroundings and very much eager to explore.

TSPI At Crowne Plaza

TSPI celebrated 20 years in the Philippines last February 28, 2009 at the Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila in Ortigas District.

The first activity was the annual General Assembly where each business unit presented their respective annual and midterm plans.

This was followed by an address of TSPI President Jiro Hanzawa. This was the best speech I heard him deliver. In his speech, he outlined his vision for TSPI expansion to be a software giant in the Philippines.

A keynote address was delivered by our guest, Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) Chairman Ray Anthony Roxas-Chua III. By the way, prior to assuming this position, Mr. Roxas-Chua was vice president of the Technology Investment Banking unit of Citigroup Inc. in Palo Alto, California, where he focused on securities underwriting, M&A advisory, and loan syndication for technology companies. He is also currently the Chairman of the Comelec Advisory Council (CAC). This council is facilitating the procurement for the 2010 election automation equipment, a difficult job since many powerful forces in the Philippines are against election automation because the only way to keep themselves to power is through election fraud. But I think Roxas-Chua has the integrity and the competence to pull this task through. I wish him success in this herculean undertaking.

It was a truly memorable evening. Everyone was looking and feeling great. It's been a while since TSPI had a grand event like this. Although there was a lavish dinner, I hardly ate. Instead, I indulged in beer and wine. Live song and dance numbers prepared by my fellow associates were the best I have seen in years.

TSPI At Dusit Thani

TSPI celebrated 13 years of partnership with NEC Communication Systems, Ltd at Dusit Thani hotel in Makati last February 27, 2009. This is the first of a two-day celebration of TSPI's 20th anniversary in the Philippines.

There was a brief presentation on the "History and Future of Mobile Phone" by a Senior Executive of NEC. The lecture was followed by a gift-giving ceremony where TSPI received a gift from NEC.

15 Years With Tsukiden

During the 20th anniversary celebration of Tsukiden Software Philippines, Inc. (TSPI), I was awarded a Loyalty Award for 15 years of service with the company. This blog is a recollection of the points I delivered in my acceptance speech. Since the speech was done impromptu, there are areas where I wish to have used different words and references to express my thoughts more clearly.

I entered TSPI in 1994. TSPI recruitment was very selective back then. It was recruiting less than ten engineers annually from the best universities in the Philippines. I remember it was a rigorous screening process. First, you have to pass the initial interview with our dear Ms. Aleli Infantado, then Human Resources Manager. Second, you have to pass several sets of examinations – a technical exam covering computer hardware and software, a personality test and an IQ test. Third, you have to go through a technical panel interview. In my case, the interview was headed by Gary Guiang. Finally, you have to pass a confirmation interview with Ferns Yu and Lando Ang, who I had mistaken as a Japanese. I was so happy and so proud that I got hired.

The people that I had met and had the privilege to work with in TSPI are among the brightest people I have known. Most of them have moved on to new ventures but there still those who stayed with the company. Those who chose to remain are the managers and officers that currently run the organization. I am proud to be part of the TSPI 'family'.

I learned a lot in my first year. Like most of my colleagues, I travelled to Japan and got involved in challenging projects. But my first big break came in 1997 when I was assigned to head a small team to work in NEC Abiko – Processor Engineering Department. It was the first time that I took full responsibility of a project. I communicated directly with our Japanese clients and was deeply immersed in the product development cycle. The experience I gained was invaluable. I believe my career in TSPI rapidly moved up since then.

Without any intention to be presumptuous, I would like to give three pieces of advice to my colleagues with plans to have a long career with Tsukiden.

First, your personal values should have something in common with company values. Tsukiden values loyalty. Consider your stay in TSPI as an investment whose value increases over time.

Second, you basically need three skill sets - technical competence, management skills and Japanese language proficiency. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Develop your weakness and sharpen your strengths.

Third, work environment in TSPI could be very stressful because of the long working hours. There are situations where you have to give a personal sacrifice. You must find ways to have a balanced work and personal life. You also must have faith that if you always give your best and treat people fairly, blessings and good opportunities will come to you.

To our President, Mr. Hanzawa, thank you very much for this award.

To my colleagues, I look forward to working with you into the next 20 years of TSPI.

Julian Carlo Miguel “Amiel” Alcantara, a 10-year old boy was hit and killed by a moving van inside the Ateneo campus. Read this link for details.

Understandably, the father of the victim is determined to press charges. Watch his interview in this link.

The driver, whose son was reportedly a classmate of the victim, was recently released on bail. She refused to be interviewed but appealed for public sympathy through her lawyer. Watch his interview in this link.

Interestingly, Rolando Villones, the lawyer of the driver, is a close relative and ninong. He is like a second father to me. Tito Rolly is an experienced trial lawyer with a brilliant mind and a mild demeanor. Because this case caught the interest of a lot of people, I am afraid that his quiet family life might be troubled by the media sensation of what appears to be a long legal battle ahead.

As a motorist who frequents Miriam College, also in Katipunan, I recognize the risks of having many vehicles and children together in a small space. Accidents could indeed happen. Motorists inside campuses should drive more carefully.

Proper security measures and procedures can be established to reduce the risks but negligent drivers are so pervasive in Metro Manila roads. The news is filled everyday with accidents caused by bus drivers racing along Commonwealth Avenue, by truck drivers falling asleep while driving hitting innocent motorists and bystanders, and road rage resulting to fist fights or even shootings.

Discipline must be strongly imposed on our roads. The way we enforce our traffic laws is a reflection of the rule-of-law in our society.

My team held a milestone party last November 12 at Agave Mexican Cantina. Being frequent customers at their Eastwood branch, the place was highly recommended by Mr. H for its chili food and cozy ambiance.

After discovering that there is a branch at the Shang, we decided to have the party there to avoid the agony of being stuck in traffic at Libis.

The night was truly festive and memorable. The guys got to enjoy the company of our Japanese colleagues and the team got to bid a very good friend bon voyage before he travels to Japan.

I had the opportunity to attend the first Ayala TechBootCamp at the AIM Conference Center Manila last October 6, 13 and 16. The activity aims to promote technology entrepreneurship or technopreneurship in the country.

Definitely, one cannot argue with success. Prominent academics, venture capitalist, executives and entrepreneurs led by Dado Banatao were invited as guest speakers. These guys have lived and thrived in Silicon Valley. Their repetitive success are attributed to their competence, passion and confidence.

So far, it was the most valuable seminar I have attended. I summarize the main learning in the following.

1. Venture Capital. I have encountered this kind of funding in my MBA school days and have met these people at SODEC and CommunicAsia. However, I have limited understanding on how this type of financing works. I was more familiar with conventional funding by securing bank loans but never through a VC. When engaging with a VC, one must know the following about the VC:

Is there synergy?(smooth relationship is a key success factor since the VC can intervene with business operation)
What is his appetite? (e.g. minimum investment of $2M, maximum 40% equity)
What is his primary interest? (e.g. software, engineering, biotech etc.)
What can the VC bring to the organization (e.g. marketing expertise, distribution etc.)

2. Elevator Pitch. Anybody with experience in Sales will tell you that the ability to communicate information about your product in a short span of time is very important. You could have a brilliant idea but could blow a deal because of a clumsy presentation. When delivering a pitch, one must be aware of the following

Define a problem
Confidence is key
Crunch the numbers ( how much do you want? how big is the market?)
666 (6 slides per topic, 6 lines per slide, 6 words per line)
Be interactive. Never read from the slide.
Check your spelling, it indicates your level of competence.

3. Vision. Dado Banatao was very impressive. Finally, I met a mentor who talks about strategic planning and product marketing with authority. He went through the management semantics interactively that kept his audience attentive. We had a glimpse of his management style, passion and focus. Dado is in the same league as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. It is very disappointing that the average Filipino does not even know him. The Filipino should celebrate Dado Banatao's success with equal vigor as Manny Pacquiao.

The event concluded with elevator pitches from seminar participants to a panel of mentors including Dado. New ideas range from semiconductor innovations (thin film), BPO innovation (video monitoring), Mobile Phone Apps and AI. I had no high expectations on the presentations but they turned out fine.

I hope the TechBootCamp would be an annual event. I would encourage wannabe Technopreneurs to attend.

I am saddened by the passing of one of my favorite authors, Robert Jordan. He is the author of the best selling fantasy novel The Wheel of Time. After publishing 11 voluminous books for the series, it remains unfinished.

Although it was reported that he left sufficient materials for another writer to conclude the series, I seriously doubt that his writing style, wit and humor can be replicated. (Read the Dune series and compare the writings of Frank and Brian Herbert you'll know what I mean.)

AIRPORT

Upon arrival at Changi Airport, if you have nothing to declare at Customs, you simply walkout of the airport without passing through an inspection. Really! I was surprised myself. Honesty system is still enforced.

At Changli, security check is performed before boarding. Each Gate has its own X-Ray and Metal detector equipment. This facilitates faster processing of passengers resulting to convenience. On the other hand, in Manila, security check is performed before airline check-in and also before entering the Gate after Duty Free shopping. In Narita, security check is done before Immigration processing.

FOOD & DINING

It is common to see restaurants with tables and chairs outdoors. It think it's the clean air in Singapore that make eating outdoors relaxing. You can't enjoy the same thing in Manila with those smoke belching cars, jeepneys and buses.

Singapore cuisine like it's people has multicultural influence. They commonly serve Chinese, Thai and Indian varieties. One of our friends was totally mad about the tasty Chicken Rice.

Tiger is the most popular local beer in town. I tried it and I think it's good. It's a bit stronger than SMB light. It's a little bit like a Japanese beer.

Ironic. Independence Day (June 12) is the day I happily lost my freedom as a bachelor. Having your wedding anniversary on a holiday definitely has its advantage. First, work will most likely not conflict with your celebrations. Second, it is very unlikely that you will forget the date.

To celebrate, we dined are the popular Greek restaurant - CYMA. The place was packed and we had no reservations. We had to wait for about 40 minutes before we got seated but the dining experience was worth it.

Nice ambiance! Excellent service! Big servings! We loved their salads and will definitely come back for their tasty lamb chops.

Dencio's Restaurant opened a new branch at Trinoma, a new Ayala mall in North Avenue, Quezon City.

I think Trinoma's main advantage over SM North Edsa is it's direct connection to the MRT train station. In Japan, it would be called a Station Mall. Retailers will get maximum sales opportunity from the heavy human traffic.

Another unique component of Trinoma is the multi-level balcony gardens. It has water fountains and ponds. Without the rains, strolling and dining outdoors will surely be pleasant. The family dined at Dencio's. The ambiance is truly relaxing.

Trinoma is still undergoing finishing touches and many stores are still under construction but it is becoming a crowd destination in Manila. As an indicator, the parking area was full.

Grace Padaca & Among Ed

In the last 2004 elections, Grace Padaca, a fearless radio commentator, won the Isabela governor seat over Faustino Dy, a member of a powerful political clan, by a close margin of about 1,285 votes. Presently, based on the latest tally, she is on her way to get reelected.

In the recent 2007 elections, the nation was again astonished by the victory of Ed Panlilio, a parish priest, won the Pampanga governor seat over Mark Lapid and Lilia Pineda, members of powerful clans and close allies of Arroyo, also by a close margin of about 1,147 votes.

There are many similarities between the two victories. First, both are highly competent yet selfless leaders on a moral crusade against corruption. Second, both faced powerful political clans with firmly entrenched political machinery and unlimited resources. Third, both ran a quixotic campaign that mobilized support of the upper and middle class. Fourth, their supporters were vigilant in guarding the votes which prevented cheating from taking away their victory.

Their success should inspire other provinces to break away from patronage politics, to destroy political dynasties and to encourage more qualified individual to run for public office.

On the other hand, in the national elections, let us examine the campaign of KAPATIRAN. They also ran a platform-based campaign but lost terribly in the elections. In comparison with Padaca and Among Ed, I think they lacked the charisma to mobilize popular support from the upper and middle class. This support is critical to gain funds for running advertisements. Even Grace and Among Ed needed funds for advertisement. Those ads send a message that a candidate is a serious contender, that he has a support base and that he has winnability. Consequently, these advertisements will further increase awareness of his campaign which in turn would multiply the support they were receiving. Unlike Among Ed's campaign, they never had the spark to start a momentum which was sustained until election day.

Can this formula for success in the local elections be duplicated in the national elections?Yes, I believe it can.

At the moment, I do not see a political figure that could duplicate the success of Grace and Among Ed using the same formula at a national level. But I do hope that someone will soon standout to capture the imagination of the Filipino people and to institute genuine reforms.

Kick-Off Party

Our business unit held it's periodic Kick-off party last night at Richmonde Hotel in Ortigas City. Doing the opeing remarks, it was my first time to address the troops as BU head. I kept the talk light and inserted some humor. I think it went well but I want to work on how to further lighten up the crowd.
I was a delicious dinner. Even the Japs enjoyed the food. Dinner was followed by a Karaoke session that lasted till 9:00pm. Well, there are the usual volunteer singers but most of the guys are generally shy. (But I think most are karaoke maniacs at home). Really! Our parties are like this! Like I said, I think it would be nicer if everybody lightens up. (I am making a mental note, alcohol consumption will most likely shake the party.)

Movie Time: Spider-Man 3

Monday. Took the day off to enroll my daughter to school. Quality education cost so much in this country! Today, I paid about P70K in tuition fees, books, uniform and other supplies. Unbelievable!

Finally, I got a chance to watch the blockbuster Spider-Man 3 in the big screen. Is this the end of the movie series? The ending seems to indicate so. First, the reconciliation HO and PP consequently ended their rivalry and ultimate showdown the series have been building since the first movie. Second, although a love confused PP could be more appealing, PP is totally set on MJ. The love story angle is tiresome already and I think it will be pushing it to try to reinvigorate this story line. Third, there is finally closure to the death of BP. PP has finally removed his guilt and found it in his heart to forgive.

What's with JJJ still in good terms with PP? Doesn't he know that this guy got between the marriage of his son and MJ? For a guy with a hot head he sure is forgiving. This event in Spider-Man 2 seems to be lost in the movie. What the heck, it's just a movie! Can't wait to have the DVD.

The Internet is full of rumors of a Spider-Man 4 based on the premise that V is still alive. He could still be alive but I think another sequel revolving around V wouldn't be as exciting since Spidey already knows V's weakness. I won't be surprised if there is another movie. There are millions ($$$) of reasons to do so.

Glad to be back home but also a bit sad 'cause my sis would fly to settle down to Las Vegas the next day. She will soon get married soon and permanently settle down in the States.

Tatay composed a sweet poem for his unica hija. It was very uncharacteristic of him to show his soft side. Tricia read the poem during her despedida dinner.

SODEC: Day Three

There was less excitement today at the booth. Although there was still a heavy turnout of visitors, I think was less excitement. I got to get around to the other exhibits and took some photos.

Here are pictures from the Software Development Wing. Microsoft and Fujitsu have the largest booths. These guys are burning money! I think the Philippine facilitators - RP Consulate, DTI and CICC should be commended. It is always a delight to see our taxes at work. I think the Philippines should continue to participate in events like this expo.

I found some time to view the Embedded Systems wing. By the way, it is prohibited to take pictures in this area but I still managed to get some shots.

Mission accomplished! Time to do some final shopping and packing. I'm flying home to Manila tomorrow morning.

SODEC: Day Two

It was a rainy day. As expected, there was a lower turnout of visitors compared to yesterday due to the bad weather. I was only at the exhibit in the morning but it was a day filled with some unexpected sight seeing.

From the Tokyo Big Sight, I took the Yurikamome Line to Shimbashi. The view and infrastructure is awesome! I am sure there are shared pictures over the Internet. It is a must see if you have a chance. From Shimbashi, I took the Tokyo Metro Ginza line to Kyoubashi where I met Mr. Kudo at the Tokyo office.

We had a meeting at NEC Tamagawa Plant at Kawasaki. It was my first time to visit this plant. The building is very modern, well-secured and imposing skyscraper. We met Mr. Asakura, a longtime executive of the firm. He introduced us to one of his present clients. We are hoping to get projects from this client too. That is the way things get done here. You cannot just drop by for a visit, offer a service and expect to get a business deal. A shoukaisha will arrange a business matching meeting. Introductions and presentations will be made. Afterwards, we hope that they callback for a job order.

Later, we had diner with associates based in the plant in one of the local restaurant bars. The waiter was a very jolly fellow.

Tired and semi-drunk. I just dozed off at the hotel bed as soon as I returned to Kamata at around 10 pm.

SODEC: Day One

Exciting! That is the best word to describe my day. I finally put my Marketing and Sales training into practice. Our legs were tired but we remain standing, attentive and wearing a smile. I approached strangers and started business talk. I got snubbed but I also found some client leads. I delivered a short company presentation in Japanese. By the way, the preparation for the speech was useful because you can carry the same message in private conversation and presentations with potential clients. Overall, it was a very productive and fulfilling day.

Here are some of the tactics I think we did right.

1. Always be attentive. It is very important to establish eye contact before making an approach to a guest. Think of the eye contact as an invitation or an indicator of interest.

2. Have a Filipino and Japanese tandem in the booth. A Filipino exhibitor skilled in conversation gives a strong positive impression about the company. A Japanese exhibitor can effectively and emphatically explain the Philippine-Japan business situation.

Here are some tactics I think we should improve next year.

Philippine Booth

1. Booth location. Try to get a corner spot where there is heavier traffic. There is a better chance for an encounter with a potential client. As a countermeasure, I suggested that we stand at the angle of the blind spot with the brochures for visitors to see the company name.

Taiwan Booth

2. Poster and Signage location. The poster is placed at about a 30-degree angle with the hallway. There is a blind spot where the poster cannot be seen. Also, the location of the signage should be higher to catch attention. I think the Taiwan booth a good example of signage location.

I must admit that I paid little attention to the details of the booth design during the preliminary meetings. It was only during the site inspection after comparing with the other booths can the shortcomings be realized.

3. Audio Visual Presentation. There is a common LCD screen. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown to me, the combined presentations of the participant in the Philippine booth cannot be played (unsupported format?). Each participant can play shows within its area using a notebook computer. However, it was very evident to that this does not attract attention. I did not see someone who stopped by to view the presentation in the small screen of the computer. An LCD monitor could be better.

4. Presentation materials. Posters, brochures and Powerpoint presentations should be reviewed and revised, periodically. Preparation for this event should be an annual planned activity.

I strongly support our annual participation to SODEC. It is a cost-effective measure to promote the Tsukiden brand as the best option for software development outsourcing in the Japan market.

CICC Philippine Business Seminar

Attended the Philippine Business Seminar sponsored by the Center for International Cooperation for Computerization (CICC) at their new office in Kourakoen.

I got to meet an old acquintance, Boots Baldoz, a former classmate in a Bridge SE training held in Makati which was by the way also sponsored by CICC. We were among the first graduates of the Bridge Systems Engineer Training course. It was a two-month full-time training which is quite long. I heard that the training program was cut short to 10 days because of the long duration. Apparently, most Japanese companies cannot deploy attendees because of project commitments.

I also got to meet other Philippine participants in SODEC. I hope I gave a good impression. Nobody can be sure what opportunity meetings like these will bring in the future. I feel that I am starting to build a name for myself in the industry.

Mr. Murakoshi observed correctly that we Filipinos are very friendly to each other despite being 'competitors'. I replied that it is a very Filipino trait to be very accomodative to everyone. However, we still understand that there is discretion in giving information. Also, we are not only promoting our respective companies but the our country too. We are united in this purpose.

Mr. Murakoshi delivered his presentation with no difficulty. During the cocktail party, I approached a fellow that could be a prospective client lead, AithCrew. It is an outsourcing firm engaged in India and China. Presently, they appear to be looking for a partner in the Philippines.

Tired. I will take an early rest. SODEC will start tomorrow and it promises to be another long day.

From Kanda to Kamata

Checked out of the hotel and took the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line Subway from Kanda to Kyoubashi. It's hard to travel around the city when you carry a suitcase and a notebook computer. I especially dread the flight of stairs and the crowd. After exiting the station, I found my way to the company office.

I met colleagues, Joseph and Murakoshi, at the office. They just arrived from Manila and went to the office straight from the airport. We had dinner with Mr. Kudo before we move to Kamata. A bit tipsy, I dragged my stuff again up the stairs and through the crowd. We took the JR Keihin Touhoku Line from Tokyo to Kamata. There was a bit of commotion when the train stopped at Oimachi for some reason. Impatient, Murakoshi suggested to change train lines. We already climbed a flight of stairs to transfer when it was announced that the train was ready to move again. Darn, we hauled ass back to the train just in time before the doors closed.

We checked-in at the Hotel Urbain Kamata Annex. Dropping the weight of our luggage was a relief. Murakoshi showed us around. He used to live around this area. According to him, Kamata was some sort of Little Philippines in this part of Tokyo. As an entertainment district, Filipino entertainers used to thrive in the area. Since the restriction on entertainment visas, business in the area visibly slowed down.

However, there is still a visible Filipino community as evidenced by the photo below. These are mostly Pinays with Japanese spouses.

Kanda Matsuri

I have never seen Chuo Dori Avenue packed with so many people. If you have fantasies of running around the streets of Tokyo bare-ass, half-drunk and screaming, pick this day.

The Kanda Matsuri is a religious but festive occasion. People dress in the traditional robes. They chanted while they danced wildly to the beat of their drums. You could see sweat running down their faces as they struggle to lift the heavy ark on their shoulders. After the parade, they sat on the streets to rest, to eat, to drink and to enjoy the company of friends.
